SUMMARY:Healing\, (Un)learning\, Growing
DESCRIPTION:Healing\, (Un)learning\, Growing \nA 9-week series built on the foundation of the taiko spirit meant to gather\, (un)learn\, discuss\, and move us together towards a more racially equitable world. \n******** \nWhat is “Healing\, (Un)learning\, Growing”?\n“HUG” is a facilitated 9-week series to learn more about the history of racism in the United States\, including how racism permeates current systems\, institutions and policies. HUG will provide a space to reflect upon White supremacy and anti-Blackness within ourselves\, our groups and our community. Using both the “Seeing White” podcast\, and selections of works from primarily Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color (BIPOC) as a framework for our learning\, we aim to move the needle (individually and collectively) towards equity\, justice\, liberation\, and action. \nWho should participate?\nThe application is open to all members of the taiko community\, no matter your racial identity. A well-balanced\, multi-racial group is extremely important to the facilitation cohort –  which is why we’ve chosen the words “Heal”\, “(Un)learn” and “Grow”. No matter your lived experience\, or where you find yourself on the journey toward racial equity\, we believe these words represent a truly interdependent experience. Of note\, we will not be recording sessions\, they will be conducted in English\, and we will be primarily focused on racism in the United States.  \nWhat is the registration process?\nIn order to create an intentional\, diverse group\, we’re doing things a little differently – our process will include two parts.  First\, fill out this initial registration form (https://forms.gle/T24e6JUr1cj5GpDR7). Our JEMPS team (a subset of the larger facilitation team) will review submissions\, think intentionally about the make-up of the cohort (not only racially\, but by gender\, age\, location\, etc.) and will respond back to all participants regarding their registration status by Sunday\, September 6th. \nIs there a cost for participation?\nYes\, the series is offered at a pay-what-you-can\, sliding scale\, $45 – $225 ($5 – $25 per session)\, and proceeds will be donated to a cause/s selected by facilitators. This cause is being determined by a sub-cohort of the larger team and will be announced by September 6th\, when we make our final participant decision and ask for registration payments. Importantly\, no one will be turned away due to lack of funds! Contact Jason Matsumoto (jason@hoetsu.com) for any additional questions about funding.  \nWhen is this happening?\nSundays\, Sept 13th\, 20th\, 27th\, Oct 4th\, 11th\, 18th\, 25th\, Nov 1st\, and 8th from 4-6 PT // 5-7 MT // 6-8 CT // 7-9 ET.  \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of diverse musical styles\, instrumentation\, & story-telling\, featuring the world premiere of international collaborative project King For A Day (Heidi Chan\, ManMan Mui\, Amy Naylor\, Lee Stone)\, joined by acclaimed and prolific Toronto-based artists BLISK and Parmida. \n$10/PWYC\nAdvance tickets: https://burdockto.com/shows/?show=1766 \nPerformers (in alphabetical order): \nBLISK (Ewelina Ferenc\, Stacey Y\, Ekaterina\, Stephania Woloshyn) is a synthesis of polyphonic Eastern European song\, dance and movement backed by hypnotic percussion. A musical journey travelling through Ukraine\, Poland\, Russia\, the Balkans and beyond\, the Toronto-based\, all-female quartet was brought together by a deep love and respect for the ancient songs and dances of these regions\, bringing the tunes to life in the modern world through unique original compositions\, storytelling\, dance and distinctive arrangements of traditional folk music. The band’s original compositions are inspired by the countries from which the members hail – Ukraine\, Poland\, Russia/Kazakhstan and Canada. \nKing For A Day is a new international collaborative project that emerged through continuous musical experimentations with Japanese taiko drumming\, adaptation of folk and children’s songs\, original compositions\, and the group’s love of musical storytelling. This group was born from a desire to give a voice to the diverse spectrum of gender identities\, global experiences\, and personal narratives.\nMembers & credits:\nHeidi Chan (Canada) – arranger\, bamboo flutes\, melodica\, synthesizers\, percussion\, vocals\nManMan Mui (USA/Hong Kong) – composer\, arranger\, Japanese taiko and flute\, hand percussion\, vocals\nAmy Naylor (UK) – composer\, arranger\, guitar\, handpan\, Japanese taiko\, vocals\nLee Stone (USA) – dramaturge\, arranger \nParmida – Tongue-in-cheek tunes for silent resentment. When Parmida arrived in Canada at the age of 7\, she wasn’t sure exactly sure how to approach her new life. It wasn’t until middle school that she realized she couldn’t do it alone\, and picked up the guitar. Since then\, she has been writing and performing across the province. In 2018\, she had her first original song\, Waiting… (Acoustic)\, released on all streaming platforms. Last December\, she embarked on an Acoustic Showstorm tour with seven dates in Ontario and Quebec. Driven by melodic irony and poignant lyrics\, Parmida’s unique brand of Alt-Pop brings a dash of cheer to our bleaker bits.
