SUMMARY:Taste of Taiko (March - June 2021)
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in Japanese culture\, Taiko drums\, or just want to make some friends online? Join us for Taste of Taiko! You won’t regret it! \nTaste of Taiko is Grand Vision Foundation’s signature community engagement program. We believe in creating unique opportunities for people to come together and engage in their community in a new way. \nProfessional Taiko drummer\, ManMan\, will lead students in Taiko technique as students learn to hold bachi (Japanese drumsticks) and how to play rhythmic patterns on different types of taiko drums. Instructors teach through call\, response and repetition\, allowing students to let go of any self-consciousness or fear\, as the thunderous sound of taiko playing in unison brings them strongly into the present moment as an ensemble. \nCost:\n• FREE\n• Suggestion Donation: $5-$15\nFor more information\, contact Lisa at (310)833-4813 or Connie at connie@grandvision.org.\nFacilitated by Connie McOsker

SUMMARY:Healing\, (Un)learning\, Growing
DESCRIPTION:Healing\, (Un)learning\, Growing \nA 9-week series built on the foundation of the taiko spirit meant to gather\, (un)learn\, discuss\, and move us together towards a more racially equitable world. \n******** \nWhat is “Healing\, (Un)learning\, Growing”?\n“HUG” is a facilitated 9-week series to learn more about the history of racism in the United States\, including how racism permeates current systems\, institutions and policies. HUG will provide a space to reflect upon White supremacy and anti-Blackness within ourselves\, our groups and our community. Using both the “Seeing White” podcast\, and selections of works from primarily Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color (BIPOC) as a framework for our learning\, we aim to move the needle (individually and collectively) towards equity\, justice\, liberation\, and action. \nWho should participate?\nThe application is open to all members of the taiko community\, no matter your racial identity. A well-balanced\, multi-racial group is extremely important to the facilitation cohort –  which is why we’ve chosen the words “Heal”\, “(Un)learn” and “Grow”. No matter your lived experience\, or where you find yourself on the journey toward racial equity\, we believe these words represent a truly interdependent experience. Of note\, we will not be recording sessions\, they will be conducted in English\, and we will be primarily focused on racism in the United States.  \nWhat is the registration process?\nIn order to create an intentional\, diverse group\, we’re doing things a little differently – our process will include two parts.  First\, fill out this initial registration form (https://forms.gle/T24e6JUr1cj5GpDR7). Our JEMPS team (a subset of the larger facilitation team) will review submissions\, think intentionally about the make-up of the cohort (not only racially\, but by gender\, age\, location\, etc.) and will respond back to all participants regarding their registration status by Sunday\, September 6th. \nIs there a cost for participation?\nYes\, the series is offered at a pay-what-you-can\, sliding scale\, $45 – $225 ($5 – $25 per session)\, and proceeds will be donated to a cause/s selected by facilitators. This cause is being determined by a sub-cohort of the larger team and will be announced by September 6th\, when we make our final participant decision and ask for registration payments. Importantly\, no one will be turned away due to lack of funds! Contact Jason Matsumoto (jason@hoetsu.com) for any additional questions about funding.  \nWhen is this happening?\nSundays\, Sept 13th\, 20th\, 27th\, Oct 4th\, 11th\, 18th\, 25th\, Nov 1st\, and 8th from 4-6 PT // 5-7 MT // 6-8 CT // 7-9 ET.  \n

SUMMARY:Online Taiko Workshop with ManMan Mui ("Body Bayashi")
DESCRIPTION:Portland Taiko is pleased to present an online taiko workshop with guest artist Yeeman “ManMan” Mui from Los Angeles. ManMan will teach traditional taiko rhythms using her unique approach to body percussion. The online workshop will last for 75 minutes with an additional 15 minutes for Q/A and socializing. Participants will receive a Zoom link via email upon registering. \nWorkshop Description: “Body Bayashi” is a body music/dance piece created during the San Francisco International Orff Courses based on the kuchi-shoga (phonetic musical notation of traditional Japanese drumming) of “Nageai/Shichome/Mikoshi Bayashi” – a basic pattern from the festival music of old Tokyo\, as learned from Kenny Endo-sensei. Through learning this dance\, participants will internalize and embody the interlocking relationship between two instruments simultaneously. The exercise can be applied to any taiko piece to strengthen listening skills and enhance understanding of the musical nuances. \nWorkshop Objectives: An innovative approach to practicing rhythm and multiple instrumental parts simultaneously to enhance listening skills and understanding of the music. Participants will use body percussion to practice shime and kane parts of “nageai”/”mikoshi bayashi”\, playing and singing two instrumental parts at the same time. \n \nVideo link: https://youtu.be/3gb92R-N-r8

SUMMARY:How Do We Lead with Empathy in the Global Healing of Anti-Racism?
DESCRIPTION:(Part of “RE-IMAGINING A NEW WORLD: Building Practices of Awareness\, Activism and Anti-Racism as a Taiko Community”) \nIn the process of dismantling practices that are born out of colonialism\, it is inevitable for us to admit that we are both the victim and victimizer of systemic racism. The process includes a mixture of shame\, vulnerability\, and courage. Why do we get defensive? How do we approach criticism and frustration? How do we practice empathy as a tactic to heal? Reference materials related to Non-violent Communication will be incorporated. \nRE-IMAGINING A NEW WORLD: Building Practices of Awareness\, Activism and Anti-Racism as a Taiko Community\nWe welcome you to join us in a virtual practice to address racism\, anti-blackness\, systemic oppression and activism together as a Taiko Community. 23 taiko thought leaders are facilitating unique topics that are personally relevant and authentic to each of them. Participants will commit to one topic\, and over the course of three sessions\, will practice and deepen the work together in a small group. \nPlease join us in this space as an opportunity to learn\, grow\, and build practices of awareness\, so that we can move together against the systemic oppression that has impacted all of our lives. \nPROGRAM DATES\nSUNDAY\, JUNE 28 @ 12PM PT / 3PM ET / 8PM BST\nSUNDAY\, JULY 12 @ 12PM PT / 3PM ET / 8PM BST\nSUNDAY\, JULY 19 @ 12PM PT / 3PM ET / 8PM BST
